The Hawaiian’s call it Le’ahi but lots of people know it as Diamond Head. Its a long extinct volcanic crater that faithfully watches over the tourist mecca of Waikiki Beach.
My wife and I recently ran up to the top of Le’ahi and the view is stunning. But another interesting aspect is all the tunnels, stairwells, and bunkers built by the US military during WWII. They’re still in great shape and its interesting to think about all the soldiers who carved these out of the mountain. All the soldiers who sat watch, binoculars ready, waiting for anything to creep over the horizon. Its the kind of job that seems great, “look at the ocean and beach all day!”—but in reality they must have been bored to tears.
This art piece was shot from the opposite side of Waikiki into the morning sunrise. Notice the little circle bokeh effect.
